BEIRUT: Since the publication of Edward Said’s critique of Western cultural representations of the Middle East, “Orientalism” in 1978, Westerners seeking to depict “the Orient” in words or imagery may approach the task with a hint of trepidation.
In “I am the Two Moons,” a solo exhibition of work by Claudia Scarsella that takes its inspiration from Beirut, the Italian artist addresses the elephant in the room head on. She includes a literal representation of an elephant and rider in her tongue-in-cheek collage “Cycling Caravan,” in which people camels, elephants and a giant tortoise are pitted against old-fashioned penny farthings, bicycles, tricycles and even unicycles, ridden by men in top hats and acrobats in circus clothing............More

CAIRO: Egypt opened its Rafah border crossing to Gaza Thursday to receive wounded Palestinians as Israel pounded the enclave with airstrikes, an official at the border said.
Hospitals in north Sinai, which borders Gaza and Israel, have been placed on standby to receive the Palestinians, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

PARIS: Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld on Tuesday delighted haute couture's new breed of deep-pocketed customer with a collection just like them -- young, modern and in many cases Asian.
Boyish, spiky-haired models wore hats perched on the back of their heads, cycling shorts and flat sandals with ribbons tied in a bow around the ankle.
Bags with long straps were slung around the body like school satchels.
Asked about the collection's youthful feel, the designer joked that not many customers were interested in clothes with an "old" feel. If there was a future, he said, "it can be like this".
Lagerfeld drew inspiration for his collection from one of the pioneers of modern architecture, Le Corbusier.................detail
