The Internal Security Forces warns of internet larceny

BEIRUT: The Internal Security Forces issued a warning Monday, urging company owners to be wary of hackers accessing company emails and transferring money from company bank balances to offshore accounts.
“The crimes of fraud and larceny have increased on the internet most recently,” said the statement, urging citizens and company owners to “be wary of falling prey to such crimes by either confirming all transfers with banks through the phone or relying on more secure transaction methods between concerned parties.”
The ISF’s warning came after hackers accessed a number of company emails and transferred money from the company’s bank balances to offshore bank accounts.
According to the statement, hackers are setting up email addresses that are very similar to those of company email accounts, and many instances were also hacking in to the company’s email server rather than setting up an alternative account.
Emails would then be sent out to local banks from the fake account, attaching a scanned copy of the signature of one of the company’s representatives.
The email requests that funds be transferred from the company’s bank account to offshore accounts.
